The Style Types Of Epitaphs In The Eastern Jin And Southern Dynasties And Their Significance In Calligraphy History

This thesis attempts to systematically analyze the calligraphy characteristics of the epitaph of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties with taking the epitaph at that period as the research object,trys to find out its significance in the history of calligraphy,which can shed light on the author’s future calligraphy creation.The whole thesis consists of four chapters.The first chapter summarizes the origin and development of epitaphs and the situation of epitaphs in the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties.The first section is divided into three parts: the beginning period,the development period and the mature period.The second section summarizes the epitaphs of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties,which are described in terms of shape and content.The second part chapter analyzes and summarizes the calligraphy characteristics of the epitaphs of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties according to the style and structure,which can be divided into three parts: Official script,Regular script and Hybridity.Due to the complex font changes and more changes in the writing styles of books during this period,the author carefully classifies different writing styles according to their characteristics respectively.The third chapter analyzes the historical significance of epitaph calligraphy in the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties,in order to understand whether it is related to the art of epitaph calligraphy in the same period and whether it has an impact on the development of calligraphy later.The fourth chapter discusses the influence on the author’s calligraphy creation,which is mainly divided into two aspects: concept and technique.In terms of concept,it breaks the previous concept of “clear north-south” epitaphs.After studying the epitaphs of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties,it is considered that the calligraphy characteristics of the North-South epitaphs have their similarities,rather than “north-south distinctive writing styles” of calligraphy.As for the writing technique,different writing styles and structures are applied for future calligraphy works.
