This paper is a report of the English-Chinese translation practice of legal monograph text. The translation of legal monograph text is conducive to the better development of economic and trade cooperation between China and Papua New Guinea.Chapter IV of Part II in Law and Social Change in Papua New Guinea,Legal Integration in Papua New Guinea: Conflict between Customary Law and Criminal Law belongs to the text of legal monograph. The text of legal monograph is a sub type of legal text, and the legal text has high accuracy in language expression. Therefore, legal monograph text has high requirements for translation quality, and it is required to achieve the effect that the deep meaning and surface meaning of the translation are completely equivalent to the original text. The report takes this English-Chinese translation practice as an example. In the process of translating this legal monograph text, the translator selects professor Li Kexing’s static equivalence theory as the guide according to the selected text content and the single reader group. This paper makes a detailed case analysis of the translation practice from the two levels of vocabulary and syntax according to the specific characteristics, and summarizes the difficulties and strategies of vocabulary and sentence encountered in the process of translation. The lexical level mainly involves the translation difficulties of legal terms in criminal law and customary law and prepositions in legal English;at the sentence level,it analyzes the translation difficulties of long sentences and passive sentences.Under the guidance of static equivalence theory, the translator puts forward targeted solutions to these difficulties as follows. The translator mainly adopts literal translation, operational analysis, voice transformation and other translation strategies.Using these translation strategies, the translator can accurately translate the original text,so that the translation can produce the same legal effect as the original text as much as possible. That is to adopt appropriate translation strategies to make all the information in the original text accurately and statically expressed from quality to quantity,so as to make the information of the translation completely static equivalent to that of the original text.Through this translation practice, the translator believes that for legal monograph texts, the static equivalence theory is more suitable for guiding the translation practice of legal monograph texts. The translator points out that the static equivalence theory has important guiding significance for the practice of legal translation, and puts forward some suggestions, hoping that the described translation process and summarized practical experience can provide reference and some guidance for future translation practice and translation research.
