"Yi" is an important category in Chinese traditional literary theory, which originated from the thought of "the debate of speech and meaning" in ancient Chinese philosophy. This thought is most significantly reflected in the field of philosophy and literature.Because it is directly related to how to clearly and freely express the deep meaning of what to say under the limitation of language, and even related to the essence of form and content,it is particularly important to interpret this thought.Because the ancients did not accurately define the connotation of "yi",their understanding was multifaceted and uncertain. In fact, this relationship is also a thorny problem in the study of music aesthetics.Coincidentally, this Oriental problem spanning thousands of years was noticed by western scholars in the 20 th century. In his book Personal Knowledge,Michael Polanyi defines the inexpresable knowledge in our daily life as "tacit knowledge",systematically analyzes its sources, characteristics, transmission channels and other aspects, and presents a picture of the world that we have never paid attention to.On this issue,China and the West meet on the philosophical path.On the basis of Polanyi’s theory,"yi" in Chinese traditional music can be divided into "yi" of speech and "yi" of tacit, and the two can be transformed into each other in various musical activities. At the same time, the "yi" of tacit understanding is not impossible to be conveyed.Under certain preconditions,it can be conveyed through direct comprehension, intermediary guidance and auxiliary suggestion. In this process,it can be found that "yi" initially exists silently in each individual’s life activities and subjective consciousness. When the subject tries to express the "yi",it will transform the tacit "yi" in the heart. However, what is conveyed through language, signs and other means only carries the information of "yi",rather than "yi" itself. Therefore,"embodied cognition" becomes the most effective way to approach "yi".
