This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of Examining Test-Taker Processes and Strategies and Stakeholder Perceptions of Relevance of the Aptis for Teachers Speaking Test in the Australian Context.As an academic text,this monograph not only reveals the relationship between the Aptis for Teachers Speaking test and the assessment of teachers’ oral English skills in the Australian context but also examines test-takers’ speaking processes and strategies as well as stakeholder perceptions of the test.Aptis for Teachers is a flexible and efficient test.It assesses professional skills related to the teaching domain.Therefore,this E-C translation could provide Chinese test-takers a deeper understanding of it and help stakeholders reflect on the major tests that assess teachers’ language proficiency in China.As a research report in the field of language testing,the source text is intended to describe the research process and share the findings and results with the reader.Therefore,according to Peter Newmark’s text typology,this text can be classified as informative text.In translation,we should fully understand the content of the original text and follow the expression habits of the target language to convey the information of the source text succinctly and accurately.Guided by communicative translation theory,this report illustrates the translation of terminology,nominalization,passive sentences,and so on at the lexical,syntactic,and textual levels respectively.At the lexical level,for terms,accurate translations can be obtained through consulting authoritative dictionaries or parallel texts and adding annotations.For stance markers,the translator fully considers the author’s intention and the context to achieve a similar effect to the original text.For other English vocabulary for general purposes,amplification and restoration are mainly adopted to provide an authentic translation.At the syntactic level,the translation of passive voices and nominalizations is handled by converting the sentence voice or the part of speech,aiming to make the translation conform to the reading habits of Chinese readers.For compound and complex sentences,reorganization,division,and change of sequence are mainly adopted.At the textual level,the translator analyzes various cohesive devices in the original text,including reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction,and lexical cohesive,and adopts omission,amplification,restoration,conversion and etc.,so as to produce a coherent and natural translation.This translation report consists of five chapters.The first chapter presents a brief introduction to the source text,the research background,objective,and significance,as well as the source text and the authors.The second chapter describes the translation procedures.The pre-translation section includes the preparation of translation tools,while the while-translation section discusses the problems encountered and the translation strategies selected,and the posttranslation section depicts the proofreading process.The third chapter introduces Peter Newmark’s typology and communicative translation principle,the leading theory adopted in the translation practice,and their application in informative texts.The central part of the translation report is the fourth chapter,which illustrates the translation strategies and skills used in the translation process at lexical,syntactical,and textual levels.The last chapter summarizes the major reflections on the translation practice as well as limitations and suggestions.
