In the history of five thousand years of civilization,Chinese people have created and inherited amounts of intangible cultural heritage from generation to generation, which brings an important window for the world to understand the Chinese nation and a major carrier for China’s cultural exchange with foreign countries. Therefore, the effective translation of intangible cultural heritage is a significant way to tell Chinese stories to the world and show the image of China. The translation materials are selected from An Illustrated Book of Guangzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage(2009-2014)compiled by Guangzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, which was published by Guangzhou Publishing House in June 2019.In the form of texts combined with pictures, the book introduces the intangible cultural heritage items of Guangzhou, which fall into categories of folk literature, traditional dance, drama, sports, techniques, medicine and customs, covering all aspects of people’s lives in Guangzhou. The author chooses nine of them as translation materials to study the guiding role of Newmark’s text typology theory in the English translation of ICH texts. The theoretical basis of this thesis is Newmark’s text typology theory.According to Newmark, various texts can be divided into expressive texts, informative texts and vocative texts, and different translation methods and techniques should be adopted for different types of texts. The author analyzes the translated materials from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels by using the method of text analysis before the translation. After summarizing the main linguistic features of the source text, namely, technical terms,four-character words,culture-loaded words,non-subject sentences,run-on sentences used in large amounts and no obvious cohesive devices of the text, the author puts forward the corresponding translation techniques, including literal translation, liberal translation, omission, transliteration plus explanation, transliteration plus footnotes, transliteration and literal translation plus footnotes, addition of subject, conversion from active voice to passive voice, combination, division, ellipsis and explicitation of cohesion,so as to accurately convey the information of the original text.It is hoped that the author’s translation and case analysis can provide useful reference for the translation research of Chinese intangible cultural heritage and its international communication.
