China has made remarkable achievements in poverty alleviation, which is of great reference significance to other countries in poverty reduction, with external dissemination value. The selected text for this translation practice is Chapter 2 of the book Theory and Practice Sharing of Poverty Reduction Experience in China, explaining the top-level design of China’s poverty reduction program, with a total of approximately 21,400 words. From the perspective of Newmark’s Text Typology,I conduct translation practice and explore the guiding role and translation methods of Newmark’s Text Typology in this text.According to the text’s function,Newmark divides texts into informative text, expressive text, and vocative text.Based on the division of texts,Newmark points out that semantic translation applies to emotive text, while communicative translation applies to informative and vocative text.Based on the analysis of the original text types,it is found that the original text is mainly informative, supplemented by expressive and vocative text. The translator combines semantic and communicative translation and analyzes the case from three aspects: vocabulary, sentence, and text.(1)Lexical level: The original text contains many four-character words that are highly characteristic of Chinese expression, which belong to expressive texts. The translator uses semantic translation methods to translate these words. For words that have rhetorical functions, literal translation methods are used to reproduce the original word’s rhetorical function. For Chinese-specific abbreviations, transliteration and annotation methods are used to preserve the original word’s special features.(2)Sentence Level: The main language function of the sentences in this part of the original text is informative function.Communicative translation methods are used to translate them.Word order adjustment is used to adjust the sentence order in accordance with the target language’s logic.Passive voice transformation is used to emphasize the translation’s main point.Long sentence splitting is used to split long sentences in the original text to achieve brevity and clarity.Addition is used to add corresponding conjunctions to reveal the sentence’s logic.Omission of the repetitive words in the sentence is to avoid redundancy and achieve concise translation.(3)Textual level: the main language functions of this part of the text can be divided into two kinds, one is the text with informative function. For the text,in combination with communicative translation methods, referential pronouns are used to achieve discourse cohesion. The other is the text with both expressive and vocative function. For this kind of text, the translator combines semantic translation and communicative translation to maintain the order of the original sentences in general. In addition, the logical relationship of the translated text is clearer by adding logical connectives.
