This is a report on the E-C translation practice of The Best American Essays 2018.The original texts of this translation report are chosen from The Best American Essays2018.They were published in well-known American magazines The New Yorker,The Three Penny Review,and Lapham’s Quarterly.The three essays are lyrical,insightful,and worth appreciating.This practice report summarizes the typical problems which the translator encountered during the translation.The body of this practice report is divided into four chapters.The first chapter is the introduction to the source text,authors,and translation process.The second chapter introduces the “Comprehension,Expression,and Adaption”analytical framework,defining the meaning of each dimension and its application in this report.The third part is the case study.The difficulties in this translation process are analyzed in detail according to above three dimensions,combined with relevant theories,and given the solution ideas.The challenges of the comprehension level are the understanding of words and context.The problems of the expression level are content and form.At the level of adaptation,the difficulties lie in amplification and naturalization.The last chapter is the conclusion.For prose translation,grasping the theme is the most important.The accuracy of the translation can be guaranteed when the original text is correctly understood.With the foundation of “faith”,readers can appreciate the lyricism and profound philosophy of the original work through translation.The emotion of the author can be conveyed by reproducing the language structure and rhythm in translation.When the equivalent reproduction can’t be realized because of linguistic and cultural differences,the translator should make adaptation on translation to better convey the content and philosophy of source text,improve translation quality and attain the translation purpose. |
