A Report On E-C Translation Of Military Term From Cognitive Translation Principles

Military documentary literature is a literary style that objectively reflects military life.It has both the characteristics of "documentaryness" and "literariness".Compared with the war history,military documentary literature is more readable.When translating military documentary literature,the difficulty lies in the handling of military terminology.Due to the asymmetry of military culture among countries,there are many problems in translating military terminology,which greatly affect the quality of translation of military documentary literature and the unification of military terminology.However,there are still few studies on military terminology of military documentary literature.Therefore,based on the principles of cognitive translation principles,the author selects military terminology in military documentary literature as the research object.This paper is based on the cognitive translation principles.According to Pamela Faber’s summary of cognitive terminology,the principles of cognitive translation can be summarized as standardization,re-conceptualization and re-categorization.Therefore,this paper summarizes the problems existing in the translation of military terms from the perspective of cognitive translation principles and proposes corresponding solutions.According to the classification of military terms in The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Military Language,combined with translation materials,the author divides military terms into military operations,military establishment and military equipment.There are three kinds of problems in the translation of military terminology:terminology inconsistency,terminology missing information and terminology mistranslation.Combining standardization,re-conceptualization and re-categorization,the author proposes specific solutions to the problems existing in military operations,military establishment and military equipment.In the specific translation process,the author believes that different military terms can be translated by means of amplification,literal translation plus transliteration,literal translation plus annotation,free translation,literal translation plus in-text annotations and image translation.The author hopes that the translation methods and strategies mentioned in the text can provide a new perspective for the translation of military terms in military documentary literature.This research proposes feasible solutions based on the problems of translating military terminology in military documentary literature.The research approach taken in this report has three advantages:first,it has strong feasibility,and points out the direction for the translation of military terminology from the practical aspect;Second,the translation methods have strong correspondences.By comparing the similarities and differences of different types of military terms,the corresponding solutions are proposed,which have strong operability;Third,the quality of the translation is guaranteed and the characteristics of military terminology are more prominent,which improve the quality of the translation and provide a new solution for the translation of military terminology in military documentary literature.
