This report is a commentary of a translation project whose source text,titled as“The legislature”,is the third chapter of the legal treatise The Constitutional Systems of the Australian States and Territories,which discusses the process of Australia's legislation,judicial intervention in the legislative process,parliamentary privilege and so on.This report describes the significance of the translation project,the process of translation and the linguistic features of the source text.It elaborates on two typical problems encountered in doing the translation project,namely,term translation and long sentence translation and reports in detail how various translation methods have been used to solve them.For the problem of term translation,four methods,namely,literal translation,literal translation with annotation,free translation and transliteration are used.For the problem of long sentence translation,four methods,including following the original sequence,inverting,embedding and division are adopted.These problems may also be frequently encountered by other translators in the field of legal translation.So the solutions presented in this report may provide reference for them and help them improve their translation quality.
