Celtic Fairy Tales is an excellent collection of Celtic tales, collected by Joseph Jacobs, which have fairies, elves, giants, goblins, and other magical beings.Heroics, adventure and romance are themes.Since January 2022,the author has been involved in the translation project for Celtic Fairy Tales, having translated eight chapters to date.Drawing from this translation experience according to the "Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation"(CEA)framework, the translator composed a report to impart insight into Celtic culture to Chinese readers. This report is structured into four sections. The first chapter introduces the translation project, highlighting its background, significance, and report structure. The subsequent section presents an analysis of the source text and target readers, outlining the translation process which includes the analytical framework of "Comprehension,Expression, and Adaptation" alongside relevant theories. The third chapter initiates a case analysis, addressing translation issues from three perspectives:comprehension, expression, and adaptation while providing corresponding solutions. From the comprehension perspective, the translator discusses translation ideas concerning word, sentence and contextual understanding, while the expression perspective focuses on how to adjust sentence structures and use words precisely to ensure smoothness and readability. The adaption perspective aims to modify the original text’s expression format by employing Chengyu and Omission to reach the target audience. The final chapter highlights the translator’s findings and gains while discussing deficiencies in this translation practice and addressing areas that require improvements. In this report, the translator endeavors to identify the unique features of Celtic literature, including oral tradition,Irish terminology and repetitive sentences, and distill some effective guidelines for translating Celtic literary works, such as Using Chinese idioms and Omission.Beyond simply introducing Celtic Fairy Tales to Chinese readers, the broader goal of this translation project is to server as a conduit for cultural exchange, enhancing awareness and understanding of Celtic culture among Chinese readers, promoting mutual appreciation and respect among these two civilizations and to foster a greater sense of global community ultimately. |
