As a part of the Shang Shu,a pre-Qin text, the Yu Gong has been highly valued by scholars because of the richness and variety of its contents, and numerous commentaries have been written on it throughout the ages.Although it contains only 1,193 words,it is a valuable historical source for future generations to study the natural geography and political concepts of the pre-Qin period. The article takes the interpretative literature of Yu Gong in the Song Dynasty as the main object of study, systematically composes and studies the titles and contents of the interpretative literature of Yu Gong, and compares the relevant interpretative contents with the studies of previous commentators, summarizes the new characteristics of the interpretation of Yu Gong in the Song Dynasty, and analyzes its causes. The first part is the introduction, which introduces the background of the topic, the current research status and the significance of the study. The background section briefly describes the characteristics of the study of the Yu Gong in the Song Dynasty, which showed a wealth of writings and famous scholars, and scholars did not limit themselves to the interpretation of words and geography in the process of scripture interpretation, but also focused on the interpretation of the meaning of the scripture, which was unprecedented in previous generations. The second part systematically composes the literature on the interpretation of Yu Gong in the Song dynasty, including monographs on the study of Yu Gong, the contents of the chapter on Yu Gong in the Book of Books, and other types of works on Yu Gong in the Song dynasty, and through this systematic compendium, the overall picture of the study of Yu Gong in the Song dynasty is grasped. After sorting out the research landscape of the Song dynasty, the reasons for the flourishing research on Yu Gong in the Song dynasty are analyzed, including the practical needs of the level of governance, national unification, and the promotion of the study of public opinion and land. The third part composes and examines the interpretation of the Song dynasty Yu Gong. The study of Yu Gong by the Song dynasty is characterized by refinement and comprehensiveness. Not only are the names of places contained in Yu Gong, the tribute system, and the system of five suits examined, but the planning, sequence, and guiding ideology of Yü’s water management,as well as the time and authorship of Yu Gong, are all the subjects of Song studies, which are more comprehensive and detailed than those of the previous generation. The fourth part examines the new features that emerged from the study of the Yu Gong during the Song dynasty.Under the influence of scripture skepticism and righteousness, the Song people suspected that the scriptures of the Yu Gong had been misconstrued and misrepresented, and even the order of its pages was questioned by the Song people.Although the trend of doubtful scriptures in the Song dynasty was criticized by later generations, there were many insightful opinions among them, and some of them were proved by later generations to be consistent with the original appearance of the scriptures.Influenced by the development of the Northern Song Dynasty’s theory of righteousness, the Song people showed a different tendency in interpreting the scriptures than the Han and Tang Confucian scholars, focusing on the exposition of the scriptures’ righteousness as a way to express their values and political tendencies.Under the influence of the Song dynasty’s thought of interpreting scriptures with a focus on the exposition of righteousness, the Song dynasty’s scripture interpretation style also showed a diversity of features, with the flourishing of the saying style and the righteousness style. In addition, influenced by the development of cartography, the graphic interpretation of the Yu Gong became prevalent in the Song Dynasty and directly influenced the enrichment and development of the interpretative style of the Yugong in later times. The fifth part examines the gains and losses of the Song people in interpreting the Yu Gong. The gains of interpretation include three aspects, namely, the application of the scriptures to the world, the creation of new doctrines, and the preservation of anonymous texts through extensive quotations, while the losses of interpretation include two aspects, namely, making assumptions based on reason and misquoting and misinterpreting scriptures. The gains and losses of interpretation are closely related to the development of scripture and elementary school in Song Dynasty. The Song dynasty was called the "ancient era of scripture",and the interpretation of scripture emphasized the use of reason to understand scripture, and any incompatibility with reason was a misinterpretation of scripture, which led to many phenomena of interpretation of scripture based on reason. On the other hand, the development of elementary schools in the Song Dynasty also provided many new ideas for the interpretation of the scriptures, especially the development of philology, which led to the resolution of the controversial issues related to the Yu Gong. The sixth part is the conclusion and outlook.Based on the research in the previous sections, the overall style of interpretation of the Song dynasty Yu Gong is systematically summarized and its contribution to the history of the study of the Yu Gong is objectively evaluated.
