Along with the deepening of the “the Belt and Road” initiative,the relationship between China and Pakistan is developing comprehensively and the number of Pakistani students’ coming to China continues to grow.Though study of Chinese learning strategies of international students in China has been a hot research topic in recent years,the depth of research on the Chinese learning strategies of Pakistani students in China is still to be explored,especially for Pakistani students of elementary level,given that they have specific difficulties in the process of Chinese language acquisition due to the influence of their mother tongue and culture.Therefore,it is of theoretical significance and practical value to conduct research on Chinese learning strategies for Pakistani students at elementary level.Taking the clinical medicine class of North China University of Science and Technology as an Example,this study made an investigation,in combination of both quantitative study of questionnaire survey,applying SPSS 26.0 and Excel 2016 for data analysis,and qualitative study of case interview,for the discussion of the characteristics of their Chinese learning strategies,as well as the according influencing factors,so as to propose teaching suggestions.The specific results of the study are as follows:(1)The frequency of elementary level Pakistani international students’ Chinese learning strategies is in medium-high frequency,not reaching frequent.(2)Among the six categories of learning strategies,metacognitive strategies are used most frequently,followed by cognitive strategies,memory strategies and social strategies,and the least frequently used learning strategies are affective strategies and compensatory strategies.(3)Age and learning time of Pakistani elementary-level international students have a greater influence on the compensation strategy and the memory strategy,respectively;the use of Chinese learning strategies is not easily influenced by gender,while it is by Chinese performance and learning motivation then mostly.(4)Case interviews were conducted only among excellent learners,which revealed that they use learning strategies more frequently.However,it seems that they had a vague perception of online learning strategies and did not use corresponding learning strategies.Problems in online teaching were also found commonly affecting learning strategies for international students after the COVID-19,such as poor network stability,insufficient resources,and low instant interactivity,especially their use of social strategies.Based on the findings of the study,principles of Chinese learning strategy training for Pakistani elementary level international students were proposed,and suggestions were made from the perspectives of learners’ strategy awareness,teachers’ guidance,learning environment and teaching platform,so as to promote,for both students and teachers,more effective learning and teaching of Chinese learning strategies.Figure 11;Table 20;Reference 64...
