A Report On The E-C Translation Of Eat Your Heart Out—Why The Food Business Is Bad For The Planet And Your Health

In recent years,public attention to food safety is becoming increasingly high.Therefore,the translator selects the book Eat Your Heart Out—Why the food business is bad for the planet and your health as the translation material,which introduces the impacts on the human beings by food industry under the society of industrial age.This book has about 100,000 words and the whole book is translated by the translator.The language features of the original text are studied from three levels in this translation report.Lexically,proper nouns and abbreviations including some religious phrases appear in the original book.Syntactically,there are a lot of declarative sentences,long sentences and complicated sentences in the source text.In the meantime,the passive sentences frequently occur in the original text.Textually,the original text is cohesive with logical structure.After the basic understanding of the source text,the translation is completed on the basis of Steiner’s hermeneutics translation theory.Steiner believes that trust is the first step in translation,which mainly comes from two aspects: one is that the translator trusts the original text and the other is that the translator trusts his or her translating ability.The translator in this report trusts the original text as a meaningful and valuable text and trusts her own ability to accomplish the whole translation process.For understanding the original text,it is essential to invade the original text because the translator has his or her own subjective thoughts.In this report,the translator copes with the translation of proper nouns by adopting the strategy of transliteration and handles the semantic problems by selecting amplification and omission.Then,after the aggression,we need to incorporate the text to invigorate the translation and reflect the meaning of the original text in the translation.At this stage,the translator adopts the strategies of division and inversion to solve the translation of long and complicated sentences in the original text and adopts the strategy of voice change to tackle the translation of passive sentences.Meanwhile,due to the differences between English and Chinese vocabulary features,the translator adopts the strategy of conversion to translate the source text.Lastly,to make up the loss because of the aggression and incorporation,the translator adds the preface and footnotes to compensate the translation of abbreviations and religious phrases.This report aims to disseminate food safety and alert people the bad influences of food industry on human beings under the industrial age.
