A Study On Weak Attributive Nouns Of“N+N”Construction In Modern Chinese

The so-called "weak attributive nouns",that is,generally can not enter the structural attributive position of "N+N" definite nouns.Based on 3537 nouns included in Modern Chinese Grammatical Information Dictionary by Yu Shiwen,246 weak attributive nouns are identified as research objects through corpus collection and collation,and these nouns are investigated from syntactic classification,semantic classification and functional motivation.The thesis is mainly divided into three parts,including introduction,text and conclusion.The introduction introduces the reasons and research status of the topic,and integrates the academic research results on attributive,nouns that can be used as attributive and definable structure.The main part includes four chapters.Chapter one defines the concept of weak attributive noun.Although there are some similarities between weak attributive nouns and the distinguishing words,locatives and transferential nouns,they are essentially an independent part of speech.Chapter two classifies the weak attributive nouns.In syntax,weak attributive nouns can be divided into five types,including attributive,associative,verb-sequence,predicatecomplement and others.Among them,the weak attributive nouns of associative class are typical categories.Weak attributive nouns can be semantically divided into four categories:event,attribute,empty shell and hard-wired nouns.Among them,hard-wired class is a typical weak attributive noun.Chapter three explores typical cases of weak attributive nouns.Some representative examples of weak attributive nouns in event nouns,attribute nouns,empty shell nouns and hard-wired nouns are extracted.This paper attempts to explore the intrinsic motivation of weak attributive nouns by describing cases from the aspects of dictionary definition,syntactic distribution and fixed collocation.Chapter four analyzes the functional motivation of presenting weak attributive nouns.It is found that the "Reference-point" is the main mechanism of the attribute-head construction.Weak attributive nouns cannot be attributive because they are difficult to appear in the reference point and have low prominence.The conclusion summarizes the research work of this paper and puts forward the shortcomings of the research,and looks forward to the future research.
