| This is a report on English-to-Chinese translation.The source language text is excerpted from Brain Inflamed by Kenneth Bock,a leading American integrative physician who creatively proposes a new way to explain mental health disorders in adolescents that some common mental disorders may have the same underlying causative mechanism — systemic inflammation.The book explains the biological basis of many common mental health problems and provides useful experience for the prevention and treatment of them.The translator hopes to introduce Dr.Bock’s comprehensive treatment concept and pioneering diagnostic methods to more people,and provide some inspiration or new research perspectives for patients suffering from mental health problems and practicing physicians in related fields.In addition,the translator also hopes to contribute to domestic popular science translation through this practice.Brain Inflamed belongs to the genre of popular science.Its main purpose is to promote relevant scientific knowledge,which thus requires the translator to pay particular attention to realizing the function of the original text.Christian Nord’s function plus loyalty theory is adopted as theoretical guidance.The translator takes into consideration the author of the original work,the targeted reader and the relationship between them in the translation process.Through rigorous investigation,the translator grasp the author’s writing intention,and develop a better understanding of the differences between English and Chinese.The translator adopt various translation strategies and methods such as domestication,foreignization,literal translation,free translation,word and sentence conversions to realize the purpose of the original work and meet the readers’ reading expectations.In this process,the translator realize that the translator’s “loyalty” should not be limited to the textual level,but also rise to the functional level.To reproduce the original work’s charm to the greatest extent and attract more readers of the target language,translators should give full play to their subjectivity,well understand and coordinate the relationship among all parties. |
