This paper is a practical translation report based on an excerpt from Philip Roth: The Biography written by American biographer Blake Bailey. The whole book is divided into six parts, which introduce Roth’s life in chronological order.Chapter 9 and Chapter 10 are selected for this translation project, which mainly describe the emotional experience of Roth and his first wife Maggie. This translation report aims to provide the reader with the experience of Roth,American Jewish history,American Jewish literature and Post-modern realistic novels to a certain extent and realize the writing characteristics of autobiographical texts. In this translation report, the translator elaborates the main tasks of each stage of the translation process in which the translator mainly follows Newmark’s guiding principles of semantic translation and communicative translation, and analyzes the important and difficult points in vocabulary, syntax and discourse. In terms of vocabulary, the translator mainly adopts transliteration, free translation, additional translation, and particularly excavates their practical meanings and seeks alternative words in culture-loaded words. The translation methods of amplification, omission and division are adopted in syntactic translation to make the original text coherent. In terms of text translation, the translator strives to be faithful to the original text, ensure cohesion and coherence, and retain the characteristics of the originaltext.Through this translation practice, the translator has a comprehensive understanding of Newmark’s theories and the translation characteristics of autobiographical literary texts. At the same time, the translator deeply understands that translation cannot be accomplished overnight, and translators must polish carefully with a rigorous and serious working attitude in order to achieve a qualified version.
