The Personal Librarian is a historical and biographical novel co-authored by the American writer Marie Benedict and the black novelist Victoria Christopher Murray. The novel recollects the story of the main character Belle during her tenure as a personal librarian of the American financial tycoon J.P.Morgan from the first-person perspective. The author of this paper translates the novel from chapter 25 to chapter31,and takes it as the basic material for further translation studies. In a biographical novel, characterization is one of priorities. How to reproduce the artistic images and characters in the source text is a major difficulty in the translation process. The translator chooses psychological description translation as the basic research object, and tries to discuss how to realize character reproduction as much as possible based on psychological description translation. In this paper, psychological descriptions are divided into two main categories—direct psychological descriptions and indirect psychological descriptions. The former includes inner monologue and illusion descriptions;and the latter involves environment descriptions, dialogue descriptions and action descriptions. The translator chooses the Equivalent Effect Theory proposed by Prof.Jin Di,a famous Chinese translation practitioner and theorist,as the guiding theory of this translation practice. The translator takes domestication as the main translation strategy, and applies translation methods like addition, omission, division and adaption,to realize a natural flow of the characters’ psychological activities and reproduce the images of different characters to a maximum extent.Thereupon, the receptor can receive same or substantially same information as the readers of the source text in effects of main spirit, concrete facts and artistic conception.
