A Report On The Translation Of A Good Day For Chardonnay(Excerpts)

The source text of this translation practice report,entitled A Good Day for Chardonnay,is taken from the first eight chapters of A Good Day for Chardonnay,one of the Sunshine Vicram Mystery Series written by an American novelist,Darynda Jones.Characterized by its humorous language and romantic touch,the novel tells the story of a small-town sheriff,Sunshine and her daughter’s investigation of a kidnapping case that took place more than ten years ago.Dialogues in the novel serve as an important driver to the development of plots.As the source text of the report is a typical literary text,translation loss will inevitably occur in the process of translation.In order to achieve the utmost equivalence between the source text and the translated text,translators are supposed to adopt corresponding translation compensation strategies in the translation process.In this translation practice,the translator chooses to process the translation from semantic,aesthetic and cultural levels.At the semantic level,the authors uses amplification,paraphrase,extension methods to make up for the loss in translation.At the aesthetic level,the compensation method of repetition and four-character words can well balance the differences between the aesthetics of Chinese and English languages.At the cultural level,annotation within the text and annotation outside the text can achieve a better effect of cultural compensation.Through case analysis in relation to semantic compensation,aesthetic compensation and cultural compensation,the important role of compensation in literary translation is demonstrated.
