| This report is based on the E-C translation project of “Cultural Influences on Context:the Business Setting”,which is Chapter 7 of Cross-cultural Communication.This chapter is concerned with studies of intercultural communication in business contexts and covers a wide range of topics like management and negotiation.The translator was entrusted with translating it in order to help the postgraduate students of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages better understand the contents.The language of the source text is concise,objective,and logical.And it is a compound text,combining features of the informative and vocative text.For this type of text,communicative translation theory is recommended by Newmark.The translator was able to overcome the difficulties faced and finish the translation with the aid of communicative translation theory.There are five chapters in this report.The first chapter provides an overview of the project’s background,the peculiarities of the original text,and the purpose and significance of the translation.Chapter Two outlines the entire translation process,including preparation,translating,and proofreading.Chapter Three focuses on Newmark’s communicative translation theory and the feasibility of applying it to translation.In Chapter Four,specific strategies are discussed with corresponding examples,including conversion,addition,extension,voice change,division and reconstruction,reference,substitution,annotation,and adaptive translation.The analysis of specific cases from the lexical,syntactic,textual,and cultural perspectives is also covered in this section.The conclusion and flaws of this practice are summed up in the final chapter.It is anticipated that this report will throw some light on translation of similar texts and application of pertinent theories in the future. |
