The uniform style was a consensus reached by most Western composers before World War II.Charles Ives was one of the few exceptions. His music incorporated avant-garde elements of atonality,twelve-tone themes, dissonant poly-tonality,and dense clusters, while also including elements from past and present music such as hymns,European classical music, and American urban music. What makes Ives unique is his ability to rapidly alternate between these different types of musical materials, creating dense stylistic dialogues or directly layering them vertically to form a distinctive and diverse musical style. This article focuses on Charles Ives’ two string quartets, with an emphasis on their diverse styles, particularly exploring the techniques of pitch organization used in Ives’ music. The author attempts to answer questions such as: What musical styles are present in Ives’ music? How does he handle these different musical styles? What relationships exist between these styles? Why is he able to create a diverse musical style? In comparison to his contemporaries, what aspects of innovative pitch organization can be seen in Ives’ work? The article consists of six chapters and can be divided into two parts. The first four chapters analyze the techniques of pitch organization at a technical level, studying the diverse tonal rows, chord structures, harmonic progressions, and tonal statements used by Ives in his two string quartets. The last two chapters focus on the specific treatment of pitch materials in the diverse stylistic elements of the two string quartets, the development and reasons behind Ives’ diverse style, the evolution of pitch organization techniques reflected in the string quartets, and Ives’ contributions to 20th-century pitch organization techniques.
