A Study Of Chen Huan’s Three Writings Of The Book Of Songs

Chen Huan was a famous scholar of Confucian classics of the Qing Dynasty.He has made great achievements in many aspects such as the text,phonology,admonition,and proofreading of The Book of Songs.Chen Huan authored a variety of academic works on The Book of Songs,among which Shi Mao Shi Zhuan Shu(hereinafter referred to as Zhuan Shu)is the most acclaimed in the academic circles,and there are many research results.His other works on The Book of Songs are also worthy of attention,such as Zheng Shi Jian Kao Zheng,Mao Shi Jiu Gu Kao,and Mao Shi Shuo,but the academic circles have not paid much attention to Chen Huan’s three writings of The Book of Songs,and their academic value is worthy of attention.The academic value of Zheng Shi Jian Kao Zheng mainly has two aspects.Firstly,Chen Huan comprehensively pointed out that Zheng Xuan’s annotation of The Book of Songs used the Jin Wen Poetry of the Qi,Lu and Han,to apply for the publication of Mao Poetry and to change the interpretation of Mao Poetry.Secondly,Chen Huan verified that Zheng Xuan’s explanation of The Book of Songs not only used materials from the Jin Wen Poetry of the Qi,Lu and Han,but also from Mozi and Lu Shi Chun Qiu.In addition,there is a lack of verification in the citations in the Zheng Shi Jian Kao Zheng,and Chen Huan has not clearly pointed out the source of Zheng Xuan’s theory of metaphysics or explored the incorrect source of Zheng Xuan’s interpretation of The Book of Songs.The academic value of Mao Shi Jiu Gu Kao is reflected in two aspects.First,Chen Huan explained in detail the “Jiugu” issue in The Book of Songs,which has more than fifty examples.In addition,Chen Huan also explained in the agricultural grain problem in The Book of Songs,such as Zheng Jian,Si Sheng Zhi Shu,and Qi Min Yao Shu.The second is Chen Huan revised the inappropriate statement of his predecessor’s commentary on the agricultural grain issues in The Book of Songs,which has a total of seven examples.The academic value of Mao Shi Shuo has three aspects.The first is a summary of the rules of the exegetical phenomena in Mao Zhuan,mainly Chen Huan’s induction of the exegetical regulations in Mao Zhuan,exploration of the main theme and interpretation rules of Mao Zhuan’s interpretation of The Book of Songs,and discussion of other issues in Mao Zhuan.This is also Chen Huan’s summary of the exegetical theory of Mao Zhuan.Secondly,Chen Huan compared the similarities and differences in the interpretation of poetry in Mao Zhuan and Er Ya,and briefly explored the relationship between the two books.The third is a graphic examination of the ritual system in Mao Zhuan.Chen Huan conducted a textual research and explanation on the ritual system in The Book of Songs,such as palaces,costumes,musical instruments,etc.In the Mao Shi Shuo,Chen Huan corrected the previous erroneous statements,and drew detailed illustrations.There are five main points in Chen Huan’s correction of the previous misunderstanding of the etiquette system: the examination of the orientation of the ancestral temple,the examination of the Ming Tang,the examination of the Mian Fu,the examination of the Tao drum,and the examination of the Yu flag.The study of Chen Huan’s three writings on The Book of Songs are conducive to improving the study of Chen Huan’s research on The Book of Songs,in order to better understanding the research achievements of Chen Huan,and providing richer explanations on some issues in the study of The Book of Songs.Through the comparison of Chen Huan’s research on The Book of Songs with his contemporaries and predecessors,we can further understand Chen Huan’s achievements and status in the Qing Dynasty and the entire history of The Book of Songs studies.And it has a certain positive significance for promoting the development of the academic history of The Book of Songs.
