The Sea painting school, which was born in the mid-19th century,is an important painting school in modern China. The aesthetic values created by Shanghai School painting reflect the important mission of "brush and ink should follow The Times".Shanghai painting,as the node of the transformation from traditional painting to modernization, its inclusive, open, enterprising and innovative spirit deserves our re-examination and study. In recent years, the study of Shanghai school painting continues to heat up.The inspiration provided by Shanghai school painting has not become a thing of the past, and there are many things worth our contemporary painters to re-understand and reflect on.The term "Shanghai School" first appeared as a reference to the field of painting, and the core subject matter of Shanghai school painting is flower-and-bird painting. We should dialectically look at the differences in the artistic styles of Shanghai flower-and-bird painting formed under the commodity economy.Shanghai painters have sought a balance between the artistic nouveau and the aesthetic values of public interest.Shanghai School painting can be roughly divided into three periods, namely, the early period(1840-1927),the middle period(1927-1949)and the late period(1949-2000).This paper mainly studies and analyzes the art style of the pre-Shanghai School and representative painters such as Zhao Zhiqian,Ren Bonian and Wu Changshuo throughout the whole paper as well as their influence on the middle and later "Shanghai School" to guide my future freehand flower-and-bird painting creation practice. This paper attempts to discuss through six chapters: The first chapter expounds the development and characteristics of Shanghai School painting through the research significance and status quo;the second chapter expounds the background of the formation and development of Shanghai school painting, mainly combing the rise of Shanghai school painting from the historical background and artistic background;the third chapter discusses the causes of the artistic style of "Shanghai School" flower and bird painting from the characteristics of The Times;the fourth chapter mainly focuses on the representative painters of the former "Shanghai School" : Zhao Zhiqian,Ren Bonian,Wu Changshuo’s artistic characteristics, artistic achievements and the impact on the later generations to further discuss the art of the Shanghai style of flower and bird painting, including Ren Bonian’s flower and bird painting with a larger space. The fifth chapter discusses the close relationship between Shanghai school painting and major domestic painting circles(Zhejiang,Beijing,Lingnan)and its influence on foreign painting circles(Japan). The sixth chapter expounds the development of the middle and late Shanghai school of flower and bird painting and the inspiration of Shanghai school of flower and bird painting to contemporary creation.Through the above research and analysis,we can deeply understand the reasons for the formation of the art style of representative Shanghai painters, and provide theoretical and practical guidance for future artistic creation.
