The theory of functional equivalence put forward by Eugene Nida has aroused strong repercussions in the field of translation and is of guiding significance to China’s translation work.Eugene Nida advocates that translation should not only pursue formal equivalence but also pay attention to semantic equivalence, but also let the target readers obtain the same information and feelings as the original readers."Big Breasts and Wide Hips" is Mo Yan’s most representative novel.Since its publication, the novel has attracted much attention and controversy from all walks of life.In 2016,the Kazakh version of "Big Breasts and Wide Hips" translated by Ahenbeck Hapchareyi and Dalikhan Nyatibek was published by Xinjiang People’s Publishing House and received the attention and praise of Kazakh readers.Guided by the theory of "functional equivalence",this paper makes a comparative analysis of the original and Kazakh versions of "Big Breasts and Wide Hips" in order to explore the guiding role of the theory of "functional equivalence" in translation and its application in translation. The full text is divided into three parts, introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction mainly introduces the purpose and significance of this study, the research status and methods, and the theoretical basis of "functional equivalence" theory. The text is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the application of "functional equivalence" theory in the Kazakh translation of "Big Breasts and Wide Hips" from the lexical, syntactic and rhetorical levels; The second chapter analyzes the translation methods and techniques used by translators in the perspective of "functional equivalence" theory with examples in the translation; In the third chapter, find out the translation inequality in the translation and analyze it to find out the problem, and then propose corresponding optimization strategies. The conclusion part reviews and summarizes the full text, and sorts out the achievements and shortcomings in the writing of the article.Through analysis, this paper holds that when translating literary works, the translator should be as close as possible to the original text,so that the target readers and the original readers have the same reading experience, and make reasonable use of various translation methods and techniques to make meaning equivalence precede form equivalence.
