This translation report discusses the difficulties encountered in the translation of Japanese Girls and Women and provides solutions from the perspective of Communicative Translation Theory. The Communicative Translation Theory focuses on the target language readers, trying to eliminate obstacles in the readers’ understanding so as to ensure smooth communication.Applying the theory into the translation process could make the translated version more natural and coherent. The first, second, fifth and sixth chapters of Japanese Girls and Women are selected as the translation project. The chapters are about the living conditions of Japanese women of all social classes from childhood to old age. This book is written in concise and natural English. The book introduces Japanese culture in English. Thus, the translation process involves not only the cultural differences between China and Japan, but also the differences between Chinese and English thinking modes. Therefore, difficulties in linguistic expressions, thinking pattern, culture information and other aspects will be encountered.Linguistic difficulties are manifested in polysemy and transliteration of Japanese words. The difficulties in thinking pattern are reflected in translating complex and long sentences in English and the transformation between active and passive expressions.Cultural difficulties are mainly reflected in the translation of Japanese culture-loaded expressions, which embody material and social culture.According to Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory, translation should be done in the way that is accessible to the target language readers.Based on detailed case analysis, the report puts forward some translation strategies and methods. At the linguistic level,it is necessary to take the context into consideration and pay attention to the multiple meanings of words.Translation methods including splitting, inverse translation and synthesis should be employed when dealing with long and complex sentences. For different thinking patterns, passive sentences could be converted into active voice or non-subject sentences. When it comes to the translation of culture specific expressions, the translation strategies and methods such as substitution, amplification, literal translation, free translation, transliteration and annotation are useful. It is hoped that the findings in this report will provide reference for the translation of similar texts.;...
