Kim Ae-ran((?),1980-)is a new generation of Korean writer and a potential bestseller who has won several Korean literary awards.Kim Ae-ran’s works have been translated and published four collections of short stories in Chinese,namely,Dad Run,Full of Saliva,How is Your Summer? and Outside is Summer,with 32 short stories in total.Space plays an important role in Kim Ae-ran’s short stories.In her short stories,space is the embodiment of the life situation of the protagonist in the work,and it is of great significance for readers to go deep into the story text and understand the author’s writing intention.In this thesis,the writer believes that the change of family space implies the change of life stage.The lack of father in family space,the fanatical pursuit of space and the hard pressed of reality make the protagonists face the identity crisis of the main body and become slaves of material desires.At the same time,warmth of the family space covers and overcomes tribulations,supports the protagonists to rediscover hope.The spatial forms in the urban spaces of Korean society,such as the gosiwen and the subway.The gosiwen is narrow and hierarchical,the subway reflects the trajectory of people.The urban space shows the desire and loneliness of young people,revealing the essence of knowledge as power,implying that human beings are inevitably alienating in modern society.Museums,taxis and foreign lands are special heterogeneous forms of space in the novel,showing the author’s concern and thinking about civilization,death,social development,marginalized groups in society and personal emotions behind grand narrative.Kim Ae-ran’s short stories reflect the emotional surge in space,and express author’s reflections and hopes on reality in a playful but bright writing style.The thesis analyzes the typical spaces from all the published short story collections by Kim Ae-ran,explores the profound connotations and emotions behind the typical spaces,understands the author’s concerns and reflections on the alienation of human beings in modern society,and seeks for the author’s solutions in a literary way.
