Space carries José Saramago’s extraordinary imagination and concern for human destiny, and it is an indispensable perspective for him to critically reflect on modern society and see through the living conditions of human beings. The spatial construction of Saramago’s novels is not only close to the social and political reality but also has an allegorical metaphor. The space itself has multiple forms and multiple characteristics, and at the same time presents the contradictions and conflicts inside and outside the space and the spiritual interaction between the subject and the space. His spatial writing starts from the historical evolution of the Portuguese nation and examines the living plight of all human beings,so it has universality of worldwide significance. Therefore, the problem of spatial writing is an important way to enter the secret of Saramago’s writing, and it is also the call of literary creation itself for research and criticism.Paying attention to the spatial form and characteristics of his novels can also provide a new perspective for the study of Saramago’s works. This article takes José Saramago’s novels as the research object, and mainly analyzes the spatial writing of Saramago’s novels from the following four aspects:First, analyze the power relations in the political space in the novel.Saramago’s creations have strong political metaphors, and the various depictions of human situations reflect the contingency, changeability and complexity of political practice. This chapter first conducts a microscopic analysis of the power function of space, reveals the uncertainty of the foundation of justice and the metaphor of space politics, and clarifies that the body, behavior and consciousness of the subject are also the result of the role and shaping of space power. It further demonstrates Saramago’s subtle observation of the public ethical relationship in real life and institutional existence,as well as his deep thinking on social environment and political practice.Second, analyze the problem of injustice in urban space. The emergence of urban space in the novel is essentially the result of the expansion of capitalist space. The hierarchical production division of space has led to serious inequality, and the flow and changes of urbanization have caused the loss of the identity of the space subject and emotional alienation. This chapter exposes the economic hegemony and cultural hegemony created by the spatial expansion of capitalism through the critical analysis of urban space production activities and real daily life, and presents Saramago’s vigilant thinking on urbanization and globalization forces.Third, analyze the internalized spiritual space and the subject’s spiritual interaction. From "anonymous" to "anti-anonymous",space has become an image symbol with profound metaphors, which is integrated with the life state of the subject and becomes a milestone for the individual to complete the construction of his own subjectivity and realize the threshold spiritual leap.Fourth, summarize the characteristics of Saramago’s space writing. The choice of space and scene in the novel is deeply influenced by Portuguese historical, cultural and geographical traditions, and has national and local characteristics. The narrative language is complex and elegant, and the text space connects reality and allegory, creating the unique style of Saramago’s space writing.
