The Guangzhi bookstore, presided over by Liang Qichao, was an influential new publishing institution in the late Qing Dynasty, which not only translated and published a large number of works introducing Western political and cultural ideas, but also had a fruitful career in the field of fiction publishing. This thesis examines the interaction between Guangzhi bookstore and the development of fiction in the late Qing Dynasty, and examines the single-volume novels published by the bureau. The first part examines the Guangzhi bookstore’s establishment history and the publication of novels. This bookstore’s history of establishment is examined in terms of its founders, the time of its establishment, and its publishing philosophy. It also provides an overview of the group of fiction writers at Guangzhi Books, the types of fiction published, and the different stages of fiction publishing at the bookstore. The second part examines the publication of novels of political utility in the first period of the Guangzhi bookstore(1901-1905).The first novel,The Adventures of the Heroic Children of the Japanese Restoration, and the case of political fiction are used to explore the influence of Guangzhi bookstore on the trend of political fiction, and to analyse the strong political overtones in other genres of fiction from the perspective of the new national image. The third part examines the dilution of political utility in the later period(1906-1912)of Guangzhi bookstore’s fiction publication.Through a categorical study of social novels and detective romances, and in relation to the views of representative writers on fiction and their works,it examines how the publishing of fiction at the bureau shifted from a focus on political themes to other diverse themes, and analyses the new genre of notebook novels as well as novels for sale.
