A Report On Simulated Simultaneous Interpreting For The Space Telescope Symposium Under The Guidance Of The Principle Of Economy

China has proposed that scientific and technological innovation and science popularization are the two wings of innovative development since the start of the new era.The government has placed a greater emphasis on the importance of science popularization.This paper aims to offer a reference to interpreter achieves effort-saving and efficient interpretations in simultaneous interpreting at conferences on the popularization of science.In the practice of simultaneous interpretation,in order to deal with the interpreting difficulties of fast speech rate,highly professional language,and intensive information at this space telescope symposium,the interpreter adopts the specific simultaneous interpretation strategies of abbreviation,omission,anticipation,compression,segmentation,and generalization under the guidance of the principle of economy.Then the author takes Gile’s Cognitive Effort Model as the standard,and analyses whether the adopted strategies can relieve the interpreter of effort through specific interpreting cases.Case studies in this report demonstrate that for the guidance of the principle of economy,abbreviation,omission,compression,and generalization can save speech production effort and coordination effort by making the target language more concise and saving time.The anticipation strategy can relieve the interpreter of listening and analysis efforts by correlating the interpreter’s acquired knowledge.The segmentation strategy can reduce coordination effort by balancing the interpreter’s comprehension,memory,and production.
