| With science and technology as its theme, science and technology conference interpreting is to promote cross-language and cross-cultural communication in the form of simultaneous interpreting or consecutive interpreting. The speeches of these conferences are very difficult to understand and pose great challenges to interpreters,in that they contain too much professional knowledge, lengthy and complex sentences, and demand high numerical accuracy and rigorous logic. The core issue of this thesis is to find out the difficulties of and solutions to simultaneous interpreting at science and technology conferences, the causes of these problems and the way to solve such problems. In the empirical section, eight grade-two students from Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation,Beijing Foreign Studies University were invited to simultaneously interpret a speech in the field of genetic engineering. After the experiment, the thesis used Professor Li Changshuan’s Comprehension,Expression, and Emergency Response Framework of Interpretation Analysis to classify the problems interpreters met in the experiment, and Daniel Gile’s Effort Model to analyze the causes of the problems, hence corresponding solutions were put forward. After the statistical analysis of the experimental results and dat,it is concluded that the difficulties of simultaneous interpreting at science and technology conferences are:the processing apacity requirements for listening and analysis and short-term memory of source languages often exceed the processing capacity available for those of interpreters;the processing capacity requirements for production of source languages and the professional knowledge requirements often exceed interpreters’available capacity and knowledge level;for taking right methods in emergent situations, interpreters must have a solid background of professional knowledge. It is hoped that students learn more about the Effort Model and better manage their attention, make good preparations before conferences and review what they have learned to improve total available processing capacity in listening and analysis,short-term memory, production and coordination, while improving their capabilities in comprehension, expression and emergency response. |
