| Colour is an integral part of the language of Chinese painting, and in the early days of Chinese painting it was also known as ’danqing’,showing the long history of colour in Chinese painting. With the development of colour in Chinese painting came the birth of colour assignment techniques, and the flat painting method was one of the early techniques that played a pivotal role in the development of colour in Chinese painting. The technique of flat painting is simply a colouring technique of outlining with ink lines before filling in with colour,a technique that seems simple but is full of wisdom. In a time when Chinese painting is in full bloom, the technique still has a profound heritage and continues to influence every aspect of Chinese painting. It is an extremely valuable subject for contemporary Chinese painters to gain a deeper understanding of the method and to draw new nutrients from it.The first chapter of this essay provides a brief overview of the plein air method, starting with the concept of plein air, then gradually leading to the origins and evolution of the method, and summarising the characteristics of the method and the main points of its technique. The second chapter analyses and interprets the application and innovation of the plein air method by ancient and modern Chinese artists,as well as the principles underlying the method, based on traditional and contemporary Chinese painting practice. The third chapter focuses on the development of the plein air method in the author’s study and practice, with emphasis on the inspiration and significance of the plein air method for personal creation in the process of practice. The fourth chapter is a summary of the author’s own practice in using the method, reflecting on the various problems encountered in practice and considering and looking forward to the guidance of the traditional colour assignment method for contemporary Chinese painting. |
