| Thomé H.Fang(1899-1977)is a famous philosopher in modern times of China,whose thought has a strong humanistic color,and have made unique contributions to the creative transformation of China’s excellent traditional thought.Fang personally experienced the May Fourth Movement in his early years,also encountered the War of Resistance Against Japan,and lived in Taiwan in his later years,had a keen insight into the problems of the times,and also had a personal experience of the difficulties and pains of individual life under the times.Thus,his concern with life’s problems continued throughout his philosophical career.Fang rarely discusses historical details,and often applies a heavy ink to the spiritual realm.the academia is concerned with the issue of human history and practice is controversial or not,but there is a lack of special research.This article extracts the three connotations of the historicity of Fang’s thought,namely "practicality","spirituality" and "creativity".This is divided into the following sections.The first chapter discusses the broad and harmonious "practical spirit",that is,the practical spirit of Fang.Fang believes that people should have the practical spirit of "comprehensive and harmony",not only based on the material world,enhance the spirit to the vastness,but also enlighten the material world with a very high spirit,and realize the same harmony between spirit and material.After experiencing the reality test of the Anti-Japanese War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the floating life,Fang’s philosophical practice of this vision has changed.In the early years,Fang was mainly concerned with the fate of people as a whole,and lacked a deep understanding of the complexity and difficulties of individual spiritual improvement.After middle age,under the influence of Buddhism,Fang gradually turned to concern for the history and spirit of individuals.The unique contribution of Fang’s thought is that it provides a philosophical path for the improvement of individual spirit and the exertion of creativity.The second chapter explores the idea of "spiritual emancipation" that is,After seeing all the phenomena,go through the facts.If an individual’s life is to be free from hardship and suffering,spiritual liberation must be achieved.The so-called spiritual liberation is to elevate thinking from a flat empirical logic world to a comprehensive world with rich feeling and reason.Wisdom is the tool leading to spiritual liberation,and Time is the convenient way to wisdom.Westerners have difficulty entering the comprehensive world because of their geometric view of intermittent time;Chinese,because of adhering to the concept of infinite continuous time,can truly grasp the present and open their minds to infinite time and space.The inadequacy of Fang’s spiritual emancipation of thought is that he focuses on theoretical reflection on the concept of time,lacks a serious analysis of people’s deep dilemmas,and his empirical cases also rely heavily on his own practical wisdom.The third chapter discusses the "creation of life" with Nurturing and educating the people.Fang believes that creation is the fundamental value of life.The so-called creation is that the individual realizes the spirit of infinite openness in the material world through practice and exhaustion.Fang put forward the path of creation from the standpoint of humanism,that is,the individual should transcend the closure of individualism,not be blinded by selfishness and ego,and be harmonious and unified with all things in the universe by creating a new way of life.This new life is a life of spiritual value.Chinese are good at removing traces and images,and enlightening reality through art,so as not to be stuck in the material world.Fang provides a solution for individuals to find the meaning of life and realize the value of life.However,his understanding of the modern system is not deep enough,which makes his exploration of the dimensions of life problems not comprehensive enough.The concluding part summarizes the historical arguments of the other side’s Eastern American thought.As one of the representative figures of modern Neo-Confucianism,the historical issue of Fang’s thought is also related to the overall understanding and evaluation of modern Neo-Confucianism in the academic circles.Studies have shown that the triple connotation of "practicality","spirituality" and "creativity" is the key point of Fang’s thought coupling modern civilization.Although his theory of comparative philosophy is not yet mature,it is difficult to avoid linguistic limitations,but it can still see the historical of Fang’s thought.Fang consciously demystifies the practicality,spirituality and creativity of individuals in the present,providing an early case for comparative philosophy to explore the basis of presuppositional philosophy.On the whole,Fang’s idea provides modern people with the ideological resources for spiritual liberation and creation of the life. |
