A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Suspense Fiction A Frankie Elkin Novel,(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

In 2003,Dan Brown’s suspense novel The Da Vinci Code was first introduced to China.Since then,suspense novels have come into the eyes of the Chinese people.The suspense novels were once popular with the Chinese readers,which has formed a whiff of writing and reading suspense novels.The interest of reading suspense novels lies in the excitement that people can experience from its ups and downs of the plot,and to some extent,this feeling is partly due to the reader’s experience of the atmosphere that suspense novels convey to the reader in the book.Therefore,in the process of translating suspense novels,how to restore the gripping and fascinating atmosphere and how to accurately convey the meaning of the original text are major difficulties in translating such novels.In this report,the translator selects suspense novel ONE STEP TOO FAR(A Frankie Elkin Novel,Book 2)as the translation material,applying Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory,and tries to restore the atmosphere and the style in the original text as much as possible in the process of translation.This report selects some translation examples to analyze the translation of the suspense novel from three aspects:lexical level,syntactic level,and textual level,and the translator explores relevant translation strategies from the perspective of functional equivalence,striving to the restore the original style and atmosphere to great extent.This report studies the translation of suspense novels through functional equivalence theory,which helps promote cultural exchanges between China and the West.Chinese readers can also gain more opportunities to learn about foreign cultures.At the same time,the translator also hopes to provide some reference for the English-Chinese translation of similar texts.
