Abstract/Summary:
With the rapid development of science and technology and information globalization, the cultures of various countries have gradually shown a new situation of continuous integration. The film and television industry shoulders the important mission of cultural propaganda and dissemination as well as the promotion of national soft power. It also plays a pivotal role in cultural exchanges. In order to allow foreign audiences to understand Chinese culture while enjoying Chinese films effectively, subtitle translation is particularly important. It has become an important channel for spreading the excellent culture of China and improving cultural self-confidence.In view of the uneven level and quality of Chinese subtitle translators, there is still much room for improvement in the quality of subtitle translation of domestic film and television works. This thesis takes the semantic translation and communicative translation theories as the framework, and the subtitle of the TV series The Psychologist as the corpus.By using the method of case analysis,it selects, classifies and makes statistics on the conversations of characters in the subtitle.Besides, this thesis also analyzes the English translation strategies of vague language in the TV series The Psychologist from the level of lexical, syntactic, textual, cultural and so on.On the one hand, semantic translation is used to determine whether the meaning and context of the speaker are accurately expressed; On the other hand, communicative translation theory is used to judge whether the understanding and requirements of the target audience are given priority.Through analysis, this thesis draws the following conclusions.First, different English translation strategies are adopted in the translation of vague language at different levels. At the lexical level, for vague words frequently used in daily life, semantic translation is usually adopted. At the syntactic level, the translation of long and complex sentences is mostly a combination of semantic translation and communicative translation, and communicative translation is preferred. At the textual level,it needs to be analyzed based on the specific context. If there is expression corresponding to the original text in the target language, semantic translation can be used;otherwise, communicative translation is needed. At the cultural level, when a large amount of culture-related background information appears in the original text, communicative translation is mainly adopted in order to make the translation clear and easy to understand for readers.Second,in semantic translation, the translation can adopt strategies such as transliteration, literal translation or literal translation with annotation. In communicative translation, the strategies such as substitution, supplement and omission can be used. There is no doubt that semantic translation and communicative translation complement each other in the process of translation.Translators should always keep in mind that semantic translation and communicative translation cannot be completely isolated, but should organically combine them in translation in order to improve translation quality.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theories, this thesis focuses on analyzing the translation strategies of vague language in the television series The Psychologist. The research of this thesis will provide some reference value for the practice of subtitle translation and enrich the research of English subtitle translation. At the same time, this thesis also shows the excellent ideology and culture of Chinese film and television works to overseas audiences, contributing to promoting the excellent Chinese film and television culture to go overseas.
