A Report On Translation Of Historical And Cultural Attractions Of Qinhuangdao(Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Cultural Translation Theory

Under the background of “Chinese Culture Going Out” strategy,Chinese culture is exerting a growing influence in the world,more and more foreigners have an interest in Chinese culture.The source text of this translation report is selected from the series of Historical and Cultural Attractions of Qinhuangdao,which is an overview and interpretation of the history and culture of Qinhuangdao city,and its volume of Scenic Spots summarizes the tourist landscapes of this city.The first two sections of Chapter II Historical Sites were chosen as the major object in this translation practice.The original text has both informational and literary characteristics.This manuscript aims to publicize the culture of Qinhuangdao city,it is mainly an objective narration of the history and culture of this area.Meanwhile,the original language is gorgeous and full of romantic literary color.The original text contains plenty of words with Chinese cultural characteristics,such as names of persons and scenic spots,historical allusions,etc.How to maximize the cultural information contained in the original language is the main consideration of the translator.Hence,the translator takes the culture-loaded words,poems and couplets as the point of departure,and uses Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory to guide the practice.According to cultural translation theory,translation is not just a simple decoding-recoding process,but also an act of communication.In the process of translation,cultural elements behind the language should be considered,and culture should be taken as the translation unit to achieve the cultural functional equivalence between the target and source texts by means of cultural transformation.According to this theory,both foreignization and domestification are good ways to achieve cultural communication.This translation report uses transliteration,free translation,annotation,footnote and other translation methods to translate and analyze the names,architectural vocabulary,historical allusions,etc.Paraphrasing is mainly used to translate poems and couplets,while the poetic form is remained as much as possible to obtain cultural functional equivalence.By summarizing the practical application of cultural translation theory,the translator hopes to prove the operability and practicability of the theory and provide reference for such translation in the future.In addition,she also hopes to make some contribution to the spread of Chinese culture through this practice.
