Modern Japan, the Edo period, was the peak of the Shogunate’s feudal rule, the period when Confucianism was established as the official philosophy, and the period when the social status in Japanese women was at its lowest level. In this feudal and unique social environment, the development of Confucianism in modern Japan was not as demonized and controlled by women as it was in ancient China, and modern Japanese women, who had been on the fringes of society for a long time, lived a relatively colorful daily life.Women in samurai society and women of the machi class, who were in the same social environment but not in the same social class, presented similar but different life conditions and ideologies, while other women who seemed to be "deviant" and made their living in the urban Edo society, such as wandering girls, tea house women, and Iimori women, etc. The text discusses how they survived and developed in the era when Confucianism was prevalent. The text is divided into five parts: Introduction,Chapters 1 to 4 of the main text, and Conclusion. The introduction expounds the purpose and significance of the thesis research, the current state of research at home and abroad, the innovations of the study, and the research methodology. The first chapter briefly describes the historical background of this study in terms of the influence of modern Japanese Confucianism on shogunate politics, urban economy, and women’s training education in the Edo period.Chapters 2 to 4 mainly focus on the time and space of modern Edo Castle to examine the living conditions of samurai women, town women,Yoshiwara women, migrant women, and other women under the influence of Confucianism in the modern era in the Edo period, trying to argue that women in modern times are not as statusless as traditional perception, and are the absolute oppressed of Confucianism, both of which have historical complexity and change.Based on the political, economic and cultural analyses of previous research, this paper seeks to describe the multifaceted image of women in modern Japan in the context of the Edo period, and to explore the possibilities of dialogue between Confucianism and feminism in modern Japan. The conclusion is a summary of the whole text and once again point out the central idea of the thesis research.
