During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, because of the special background of the times and the influence of internal contradictions, the phenomenon of mutual exile of the clans of the southern and northern regimes was very common. Moreover,it was characterized by more from the south to the north and less from the north to the south. The exiled clans from the south to the north can be divided into four periods. The first period was roughly from the end of the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the demise of the Liu Song Dynasty. The characteristics of the exile of clans in this period were from the south to the north. The exile clans were divided into two groups, namely the Sima clan and the Liu clan. The main reason for the former’s exile in the north was the change of dynasties, and the main reason for the latter’s exile was the fierce political struggle within the dynasty. In the second period, from the establishment of Xiao Qi to the reign of Xiao Yan,Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty, the characteristics of this period were still from the south to the north.Because of the demise of the Liu Song regime in the south,Xiao Daocheng became the Song Jianqi,so those who fled to the north were the Xiao Qi clan. The third period is the reign of Xiao Yan,Emperor Liang Wu of the Southern Dynasty. Its characteristics were that the north and south move each other, and the representatives were Xiao Zhengde and Yuan Hao.The fourth period was from the rebellion of Hou Jing to the unification of the Sui Dynasty and the Southern Chen Dynasty. Its characteristics were from the south to the north. The representative figures were Xiao Zhengbiao and Xiao Yuanming. In the special period of the confrontation between the North and the South, the exiled clans were the political banner for the two sides to use and fight against each other, and also a powerful weapon for political propaganda to the other side. The fugitive clans were also willing to use their special influence to influence the political situation and seek benefits.Because of cultural differences, most of the exiles of the imperial family of the Northern Wei Dynasty were despised by the rulers and ministers of the Southern Dynasty. The Northern Dynasty paid more attention to the exiled royal family, set up a special management organization, and often granted marriage.Although most of the northern clans of the Southern Dynasty were given preferential treatment, they also faced the problem of rapid changes in identity. This was a long process, and it even took several generations to complete the transformation from identity.Their identity transformation was accompanied by complex cultural conflicts and psychological contradictions. The exiled clan individuals and their families gradually faded the color of the exiles in the process of marriage and reproduction, and continued to merge with the ruling group. Most of the exiled clans changed from the political banner of surrender and treason to ordinary gentry, while maintaining certain political influence. The exiled imperial family also brought the culture of the Southern Dynasty and had a profound impact on the development of the culture of the Northern Dynasty.
