| As an American black artist with dual cultural background,Kerry James Marshall chooses to fight against the marginalization of black people with the narrative form of "marginal narrative",which is different from the "black humanity" of white mainstream art and inserts a "black ontology" in the Western mainstream art where there is no black humanity at all.By invoking the context of history and culture,he re-places the black image,which has long been invisible in Western art history,in the narrative of painting history,and achieves the picture with its unique historical narrative.His work has always focused on black subjectivity,depicting black groups ignored by racism,showing the real or fictional experiences of black Americans,past and present conditions,and combining different traditions and artistic categories,and spared no effort to tell his own story and the life story of every African American standing behind him.In his paintings,Kerry James Marshall abstracts black images as signifiers,selects African traditional symbols and American classic schema symbols,deeply studies ambiguous moments that are very important to black culture,draws narrative scenes from history and the artist’s own life,and borrows images and narratives with model significance from the history of art and cultural history.It uses collage,appropriation,juxtaposition and other techniques to subtly update its composition form and style features,reinterpret its metaphorical rhetoric,create illusory situations and Spaces in the picture,construct a well-designed structure and framework in today’s context,and transform the narrative into a visual spatial existence.He presents his rethinking of politics,history,culture,race and identity in a specific space.Inspired by the theory of narrative space,this paper takes "narrative space" as the entry point and combines Kerry James Marshall’s paintings to discuss and study the "narrative space" of Kerry James Marshall’s paintings,and analyzes the shaping and construction of narrative space by abstract,collage and expressive elements in Kerry James Marshall’s paintings.Analyze the multiple narrative space dimensions implied in the works and explore the profound meaning field behind his paintings.The thesis is divided into four chapters: The first chapter focuses on narrative space,summarizes the narrative space theory from the perspective of narrates,clarates the construction and writing of narrative space from the perspective of painting,and logically analyzes the presentation of narrative space in Kerry James Marshall’s artistic creation.The second chapter mainly explores the narrative space construction of Kerry James Marshall’s paintings,and combines Marshall’s artistic creation from the methodological level to carry out detailed discussion from three aspects: the narrative space framework under the symbol schema,the narrative space framework under the juxosition of "scene" and the narrative space framework under the fictional field.This paper deeply explores the narrative space shaping technique in Kerry James Marshall’s artistic creation.The third chapter aims to explore the multiple narrative space dimensions of Kerry James Marshall’s paintings.Starting from the two spatial dimensions of psychological space and social space,it discusses and analyzes the picture structure of constructing psychological space and social space in paintings,interprets the profound narrative discourse conveyed behind the specific spatial types,and thus has a deeper understanding of the ideological connotation of Marshall’s works.The fourth chapter focuses on the realistic significance of the "narrative space" of Kerry James Marshall’s painting in contemporary China,so as to explore the real value of Marshall’s artistic creation.It shows the uniqueness of his painting works,and points out the significance of his formal language and painting concept to the author’s creation practice. |
