The elephant Abul Abbas,as a diplomatic gift from Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid to Carolingian King Charlemagne, has important research significance.Carolingian sources have many references to this elephant. The gift of elephants is an expression of friendship and the result of mutual interaction, reflecting the unusual nature of elephants in Arabic and Frankish cultures. In addition, the elephant gift incident reflects that Charlemagne pursued a principle in the design of foreign relations and in the process of communication-befriend distant states while attacking those nearly.Elephants have political significance as an attribute of the royal family, and the elephant gift event reveals the relationship, gift policy, and the image of Christian Europe to the world at that time. The peaceful intercourse between the Carolingian king Charlemagne and the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid captured the imagination, but it is not surprising because it upends modern perceptions of medieval Christians and Muslims.interaction expectations.More specifically,it’s about Charlemagne’s attitude toward Muslims, the rapport between the Christian Frankish monarch and the Muslim ruler Harun al-Rashid.Returning to history itself, the seemingly reasonable clash of civilizations between Christianity and the Islamic world essentially concealed the real content of power politics in the early Middle Ages. The relationship between the two rulers was essentially a choice based on the legitimacy of immediate practical interests. In short, the event of the elephant gift as an example of the foreign relations of the Carolingian Dynasty provides us with a different perspective for studying the relations of the early Middle Ages.
