Since the birth of China’s first television documentary,"The Heroic Xinyang People," the documentary has gradually become an independent artistic carrier through years of development.The focus on characters in documentaries has gone through a process of civilian development from elite to marginal figures to ordinary people,gradually establishing an eternal theme centered on people.The humanistic spirit displayed in character documentaries of different periods also varies,from focusing on propaganda and enlightenment to self-expression,to exploring the relationship between human beings and society.However,no matter how changes are made,they always adhere to the same principle,which is to affirm human values and dignity,and praise human nature and power.The same emotional perspective,universal sentiments,and value dimensions of popular character documentaries and humanistic spirits urge the two to "marry hand in hand".Nowadays,documentaries of civilian characters have become an important carrier for the expression of humanistic spirit,using storytelling narrative methods,civilian narrative perspectives,and daily narrative space as narrative strategies,using audio-visual language,adhering to an objective and sinking creative attitude,conducting profound and independent thinking,and emphasizing the output of cultural values.The non bottom expression of humanistic spirit to the bottom society,the starting point and foothold of human-centered,as well as the social reality content it carries,enhances the social responsibility of creators,enhances the creative aesthetics of documentary films,enhances the audience’s ontological awareness,and ultimately becomes the essential core of civilian character documentaries.Although some popular character documentaries excessively pursue marginalization,lack thinking,and are plagued by popular culture and entertainment.There are certain problems and dilemmas in the expression of humanistic spirit,we should maintain a clear mind and adhere to the final bottom line,Giving full play to the humanistic spirit of civilian character documentaries plays an important role in studying the survival value and life significance of ordinary groups in society.Currently,most of the research results are classified as "civilian character documentaries" and "documentary humanistic spirit",without in-depth exploration of the relationship between the two.However,in fact,they are interdependent,intertwined,and fused with each other,with a close connection: the theme of civilian character documentaries is precisely the expression of humanistic spirit,and the humanistic spirit of documentary films is mostly reflected in civilian character documentaries.This article combines the research of "civilian character documentary" and "documentary humanistic spirit",which can more comprehensively understand the humanistic spirit connotation in civilian character documentary,more deeply excavate the social,historical,cultural and other aspects of humanistic value contained in the works,and provide more thinking and inspiration for theoretical research and documentary creation.
