Abstract/Summary:
Imagology is an important branch of comparative literature, which mainly studies the exotic images in literary works and reveals the causes and differences of the images. The image of imagology is limited to the foreign image, which has various forms of expression in the work, such as the image of the character or the description of the landscape. From the perspective of imagology, people can further understand the mutual observation and expression of different nationalities through the study of literature.William Makepeace Thackeray was a representative novelist in the period of Victorian England, whose main purpose in writing Vanity Fair was to criticize social reality. For this purpose,Thackeray described Becky’s struggle against the patriarchal society with the help of her own intelligence, thus creating an impressive image.Yang Bi’s version, the most famous of Vanity Fair’s Chinese translations, vividly conveyed the true purpose of Thackeray. In the process of studying the translation,it is found that the translation generally restores the image of Becky in the source text, but the translator made some changes in the description of language, behavior and attitude. Therefore, the writer takes this as the research focus, starts from the perspective of imagology, supported by translation studies;literature review method, case analysis method and comparative research method are used to study Becky’s image in the Chinese translation of Vanity Fair by Yang Bi from two aspects: intrinsic textual analysis and extrinsic textual analysis. The analysis of intrinsic textual focuses on lexicons and hierarchical relations, and the writer selects representative descriptions of Becky, and summarizes how translator made changes to the character. The extrinsic textual analysis focuses on the imaginaire social, and the translator herself. From these two aspects,it discusses the external reasons that affect the translator to make changes. The study found that the translator translated the key contents of Becky’s image through domestication and foreignization translation strategy, and made certain changes and beautification of Becky’s image in this process. In terms of hierarchical relations, the translator changed the original story content according to the native culture to adapt to the national culture, thus strengthening the hierarchical relations of the article.Compared with the acerbic image in the source text, the translator preferred to present the positive side of Becky. The reason for the translator to do this was that she has received a good education since childhood and was more aware of the difficulties of being a woman. At the time when the feminist thought was spreading in China,Yang Bi as a female translator, through conscious construction she tried to convey a more positive female image,so as to achieve the purpose of solidarity with women. In the aspect of imaginaire social, when Sino-Soviet relations were friendly, the society vigorously propagated socialist thought and criticized the corruption of capitalism.Yang Bi’s translation weakened the negative image of Becky in the source text, which could better set off the purpose of criticism.
