A Practice Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Global Food Insecurity

Since the outbreak of the world food crisis in 2008,almost no country has been spared.What was worse,the global COVID-19 epidemic in 2020 deepened the food crisis and made the international food market more volatile.Food prices are rising across the country,adding to concerns about food supply security,with the United Nations even warning that the world is on the brink of its worst food crisis in at least50 years.Therefore,it is urgent to maintain food security.Focusing on the current hot issues,the author hopes to make some contributions to the global food problem.The translation of information-based text tries to objectively convey the content of original text.This project aims to introduce the current situation of global food and the problems of global food governance,so as to give some relevant suggestions.The whole text is flexible in terms of words,for example,a lot of prepositions and nominal phrases are used to express the meaning of verbs.In terms of sentence structure,various clauses are used in the whole text,and the usage rules are quite different from those in Chinese.The great differences between English and Chinese often result in the incorrespondence between words and sentences in English-Chinese translation.Therefore,translation shift is needed to achieve communication purpose.Catford’s theory studies translation from the basic levels of vocabulary and syntax,explores the specific changes that can be carried out in the translation process,and seeks the equivalence relationship between English and Chinese.After systematic research,the author believes that Catford’s theory is highly practical,especially the pursuit of equivalence in text content,which happens to be consistent with the principle of "content is more important than form" in informational-based text,so it has a strong guiding significance for the translation of informational-based text.Therefore,as a student of an agricultural university,the author closely combines the advantages of the subject background,and takes the English-Chinese translation practice in Chapter 8 of Global Food Insecurity as an example to discuss the translation strategies of information-based text from three aspects: structural shift,class shift and unit shift.In terms of structural shift,the paper mainly discusses it from active sentence to passive sentence,from prepositive attributive to postpositive attributive,and from positive sentence to negative sentence.In the aspect of class shift,the shifts from English nouns,prepositions and adjectives to Chinese verbs are widely used in this translation practice.Finally,in the aspect of unit shift,the paper focuses on the shift of English phrases into Chinese clauses and English sentences into Chinese sentence groups.The author tries to write a practice report on the translation process,translation strategies and difficulties encountered in translation,so as to provide a theoretical basis for translation practice,and provide experience and reference for the translation of information-based texts.
