A Report On C-E Translation Of China Transportation Development Report 2020 (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Translation Shift Theory

At the initial stage of implementing the “14th Five-Year Plan”(2021-2025),President Xi has stressed that transportation is playing a leading role in national economic and social development and called for continuous efforts to turn China into a country with great transport strength.Meanwhile,with the rapid development of China’s transportation industry and the in-depth implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative,transportation plays a critical role in strengthening international exchanges and cooperation,promoting global sustainable development and building a community with a shared future for mankind.Therefore,the translation and spread of transportation texts contribute to the understanding of the world for the development course and achievements of transportation industry in China.The book China Transportation Development Report 2020,authored by Institute of Comprehensive Transportation,NDRC(National Development and Reform Commission)in2020,is selected as the translation material,in a bid to explore the feasibility and application of Catford’s translation shift theory in the translation of informative text related to transportation.Under the guidance of Catford’s translation shift theory and based on the basic differences between Chinese and English,this report adopts domestication translation strategies and flexibly uses various translation techniques to focus on the level shifts and category shifts occurred in the actual translation process.On the basis of case study,the following conclusions can be drawn.First of all,due to the basic linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English,translation shifts are inevitable in the actual translation process.Secondly,Catford’s translation shift theory plays a guiding role in the translation practice of informative text concerning translation,but it also has certain limitations because it does not involve the shifts of discourse,pragmatics and culture at a macro level.Finally,due to the professionalism of transportation text,the translator encounters some obstacles in the comprehension of the source text.Therefore,in order to ensure the quality of the translation,the translator should make full preparations before translation,and check the accuracy and consistency of terminologies and expressions through multiples ways.In addition,this translation practice report flexibly uses various translation methods and techniques,with a view to providing some reference for the subsequent translation studies in this field,and contributing to the external communication of China’s transportation industry.
