Studying the role of translation in shaping war and ideology contributes to the understanding of historical facts and offers new perspectives on the study of war and translation. This paper is a practical report based on the English-Chinese translation of New Approaches to Translation,Conflict and Memory, one of Palgrave’s interdisciplinary book series studying the language of war.Seriously and formally, the author examines Langston Hughes’ s views on the Spanish conflict and includes a history of the Spanish Civil War and the views of a variety of other scholars. This translation project serves as a reference for historians, political scholars, military scholars, and scholars of translation.Catford’s translation shifts theory mainly includes level shift and category shift, with an emphasis on the transmission of information and the reciprocity of meaning, which provides theoretical support for current translation practice. In this practice, level shift includes the conversion between English grammar and Chinese vocabulary.Category shift includes structural shift, class shift and unit shift, where the structural shift is primarily aimed at post-attributive to pre-attributive and passive voice to active voice conversion and class shift is mainly aimed at the conversion of nouns to verbs and of prepositions to verbs;the unit shift mainly involves the conversion of phrases and clauses to sentences.Through a summary analysis, the translator found that the translation shift theory can well guide the translation of informative texts,in which three types of translation shift are used relatively frequently:structural shift, class shift, and unit shift.
