A Report On The Translation Of Theoretical Exploration And Practice Of Constructing Green Village And Town In China（Preface And Chapter 1）

This paper is a report on a translation project of a to-be-published book Theoretical Exploration and Practice of Constructing Green Village and Town in China trusted by School of Civil Engineering ＆ Mechanics of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.The source text of this report is the preface and the first chapter.This two chapters briefly introduce the overall background,relevant concepts and the contents of each chapter.They lead the readers to understand the whole book with great significance.In addition,the two chapters have typical language characteristics at lexical level,syntactic level and grammatical level,such as some words with era characteristics;flexible use of tense;sentences without subjects and long and compound sentences.Therefore,the translator chooses the two chapters as the material to analyse and summarize the difficulties and solutions in the translation practice.In this report,the translator chooses the Theory of Translation Shift of British linguist Catford as the theoretical basis.The Theory of Translation Shift can be divided into level shift and category shift.Level shift can be further divided into grammar shift,lexis shift,phonology shift and graphology shift.Category shift can be further divided into structure shift,class shift,unit shift and intra-system shift.Focused on grammar shift and the four sub-categories of category shift,this report discusses the translation difficulties at lexical,syntactic and grammatical level as well as the corresponding solutions based on the theory.Through translation practice,the translator finds out that the translation shift theory has good adaptability and guidance for the translation of informative text.Under the guidance of translation shift theory,grammar shift solves the tense translation problem;structure shift provides help for the flexible change of sentence structure;class shift solves the problem of inequivalence of words in terms of part of speech;unit shift allows the alternation of sentence components and makes the translation more readable;and intra-system shift gets rid of the inflexibility of literal translation and makes the translation more authentic.All in all,translation shift theory can be instructive to the translation of informative text.The translator hopes that this report can provide some reference for future translation activities.
