The number of people suffering from mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression has increased due to social pressure and the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent years, coping with these mental illnesses has become a hot issue of public concern. The source text of this translation practice is selected from the fifth and sixth chapters of the English book Evidence-Based Treatment for Anxiety Disorders and Depression: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Compendium. This monograph mainly introduces the application of cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of various mental diseases, and the selected chapters explain the treatment of agoraphobia and social anxiety disorder respectively. The source text is a medical informative text with many technical terms and complex long sentences. And the focus of translation is to convey the information objectively and succinctly.Guided by Catford’s translation shift theory, the author studied the shift phenomenon in the process of translation.Catford explained the translation shift by the systemic grammar, and thought that“shifts” mean departures from formal correspondence in translation.Based on this theory and started from the level shifts and category shifts, the author discussed various shifts during the translation in the fourth chapter of this report, such as tense, plurality, unit, class and structure shifts. It is found that most of the problems, such as word and sentence structure analysis in the translation, may be expressed effectively through shift, which shows that translation shift theory can be an effective guide in the translation of medical informative texts. With this translation practice, the author hopes to better understand Catford’s translation shift theory and apply it to translation practice. In addition,it is hoped that the translation could be a way for relevant people to learn the latest research results in this field, and provide reference for the research of anxiety disorders and depression. |
