The translation report is based on the translation practice of Chapters 1 to 5 of the book Information Spread in a Social Media Age: Modeling and Control.Based on the post-editing practice of the Machine Translation System Deep L Pro,the report analyzes the handling of coherence issues in machine translation, and summarizes post-editing methods and techniques to achieve coherence problems. The source text is an academic text with rigorous logic and complex syntactic structures. There are significant differences between English and Chinese in grammar, semantics and logic, which pose challenges for machine translation, particularly in terms of coherence. Therefore,it is important to precisely understand the information that the author aims to convey, and to adopt appropriate translation methods and strategies to improve the machine translated text. This will help in reconstructing coherence in the translated text, and better representing the original author’s intent.During the post-editing process,it is found that coherence issue is the main reason for the low readability of the machine translation, making coherence the focus of the translation practice. This report analyzes how to achieve coherence in the target text at three levels: grammar, semantics, and logic. At the grammatical level, three different methods, namely, denotation, substitution and omission, are used to construct the coherence of the target text;at the semantic level, through the use of repetition, collocation and other means, the translator accurately achieves coherence in the discourse within the context from the perspectives of vocabulary and sentence structure;at the logical level, how to transform the cause-effect,conditional and transitive relations in the original text to realize the logical coherence of the translation is discussed. To address the above coherence issues, the translator mainly employs the method of liberal translation and translation techniques, such as omission, addition, lexical conversion and word order adjustment,to ensure coherence in the target text.Through this translation practice, the translator gains a profound understanding of how to achieve coherence in academic texts, and realizes that in order to construct a coherent translation,it is crucial to firstly identify the cohesive features of the source text and then make suitable adaptations to the translation, taking into account the differences in linguistic expressions and cultural cognition between Chinese and English,so as to produce a coherent and fluent translation.More importantly, the translator not only enhances the post-editing competence, but also acquires a deeper knowledge of translation theories. At the same time,it is expected that this report can serve as a valuable reference for translating similar texts.
