A Study On The Relationship Between College Students’ Personality Traits And Deception Detection

At present,the phenomenon of fraud occurs frequently in every corner of society,and the bad consequences caused by fraud(such as telecom fraud leads to the suicide of students,the elderly are cheated out of the "coffin book",etc.)are also painful.Therefore,the field of deception and deception detection has gradually attracted people’s attention,and also triggered the in-depth research of scholars: What kind of people are more likely to be cheated? Are there certain characteristics that people who are deceived have in common? This series of problems has gradually become a hot field of research.Literature review shows that there is a certain correlation between personality and deception detection ability.For example,among the big five personalities,people with stronger extroversion tend to identify deception more easily.These people have strong social ability and are more likely to detect the "abnormal" performance of others in interpersonal communication,thus indirectly improving their deception detection ability.However,previous studies on the relationship between personality and deception ability were often based on the single theory of "Big Five personality",and did not discuss the relationship between personality and deception detection ability from multiple theoretical perspectives.Meanwhile,the five personality factors in "Big five personality" all belong to "positive" personality,so the relationship between "negative" personality and deception detection ability cannot be obtained.So the theoretical system is not perfect.At the same time,"cheating" itself will cause personal,social and even national losses,and is a bad behavior.Just like criminal behavior,it is often easily associated with some negative psychological traits,for example,serial killers often have some obvious abnormal psychology."Dark personality" mostly describes the dark side of individual personality traits,which is exactly the opposite of the personality traits described by "Big Five personality".The deficiency of the Big Five personality model can be supplemented through the examination of the relationship between dark personality and deception detection ability.In the research on the relationship between personality traits and deception detection ability,the research related to the dark side of personality can be supplemented.Therefore,this paper intends to add the personality trait of "dark personality" on the basis of the big five personality traits,and use the theory of dark personality traits to supplement the research on the negative personality in the correlation between personality and deception detection ability,so as to improve the research on the relationship between personality traits and deception detection.Objective: To explore the relationship between different personality traits(dark personality and Big Five personality traits)and deception detection ability,to further explore whether personality factors have a certain predictive effect on the accuracy of deception detection based on the obtained results,and to improve the correlation study between negative personality traits and deception detection ability.Methods: A total of 117 college students(including graduate students)from Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were selected as samples,using a simplified version of the Big Five Personality Scale(NEO-FFI),the Dirty Dozen(DD),and a set of procedures made using E-prime3.0 for deception-detection accuracy collection,finally,117 valid data copies were collected and compiled.Subsequently,SPSS23.0 was used to conduct statistical analysis of the data,mainly including the statistical methods:t-test,correlation analysis,multiple regression analysis etc.Results:(1)Among the big five personality traits,extroversion(r=0.273,p <0.01),conscientiousness(r=0.253,p < 0.01)and neuroticism(r=0.221,p< 0.05)had significant positive correlation with the accuracy of deception detection,while the other two personality factors had no significant correlation;(2)Among the dark personality traits,narcissism(r=0.191,p < 0.05)and Machiavellianism(r=0.236,p < 0.05)were significantly positively correlated with deception detection ability,while psychopathy was not significantly correlated with deception detection ability;(3)In the dark personality traits,there was a significant positive correlation between Machiavellianism,narcissism(r=0.307,p < 0.01)and psychopathy(r=0.345,p < 0.01),but there was no significant correlation between narcissism and psychopathy;(4)Machiavellianism can positively predict deception detection ability(t=2.009,p=0.047 < 0.05).
