A Report On The Translation Of Caxton And His World (Chapters Seven And Nine)

This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the historical text Caxton and His World.With the guidance of the functional equivalence theory proposed by Nida,the author has analyzed 20 typical cases of translation problems brought by cultural default and offered corresponding translation strategies.Caxton and His World is recognized as a synthesis of historical facts and research findings.There are a large number of vocabularies featuring cultural default,which inevitably causes translation loss and brings difficulties to target language readers.In order to tackle the problems brought by cultural default,translation strategies should be utilized to compensate for the loss of cultural information,thus helping target language readers acquire the same response as source language readers.On the one hand,the author uses explicit compensation strategies to add footnotes to terms of English manuscript,proper nouns of figure and work,and other specific nouns;add notes-in-text to Middle-English words and words of special usage.On the other hand,the author adopts amplification of implicit compensation strategies to contents and grammatical structures;adopts extension to words,phrases,and sentences.This practice is expected to serve as a reference for the translation of other historical texts.Furthermore,with the guidance of the functional equivalence theory,corresponding translation strategies are discussed in 20 cases to tackle translation problems brought by cultural default.It is hoped to help other translators effectively solve problems like this.
