A Translation Report On China’s Reform And Opening Up History Under The "Comprehension,Expression And Adaptation(CEA)" Analytical Framework

In 2022,the author participated in a translation task commissioned by the Foreign Languages Press,translating a book on the history of China’s reform and opening up into English.The author was responsible for the translation of three sections of 20 thousand Chinese characters.One month after,the draft translation was revised by the reviewer of the press.Through comparing the draft translation and the revised translation,the author wrote this translation report to review the problems solved through her own efforts and the revision of the reviewer.The translation version would be published at home and abroad,targeting both overseas readers interested in China’s reform and opening up and domestic readers with English literacy.The source text used concise and formal language,but there are also light,easy-to-understand or literary expressions.In the process of translation,the author tried to be faithful,follow the style of the original text,and made some adaptations to provide the readers with the same reading experience.The report follows the CEA(Comprehension,Expression,and Adaptation)analytical framework proposed by Li Changshuan.The author reviewed the translation problems she encountered in this practice and how she resolved them with critical thinking and research.The report starts with a very short introduction of China’s reform and opening up policy and the background of the translation task.Then it introduces the CEA framework,including its main ideas and the connections with related theories.The third chapter is the case study where the author uses examples to show the considerations behind revisions from three perspectives:comprehension,expression and adaptation.The comprehension section has two parts:the relationship between words,and the logic relationship,aiming to achieve a full understanding of the original text.The expression section,focusing on the expression of the content and the structure,is divided into three categories:using precise expressions,avoiding unnecessary expressions,and using proper structure.The section aims to fully convey the message and make the translation conform to English usage.The adaptation section focuses on the three methods:amplification,omission and adjustments,to improve the effect of communication and reading experience.Through the task,the author realized that there is a long way to go in translation.Translators should keep enhancing their language competency,since it is the basic requirement.They should also focus on accumulating background knowledge in certain fields if they want to be an expert translator.In addition,translators should develop critical thinking to act on their initiatives.
