Based on the theory of structural metaphor,teacher role metaphor compares teachers’ thoughts and behaviors with activities or things in other fields so as to highlight the characteristics of teachers’ professional roles.Students’ teacher metaphor can reflect their cognition and expectation of the teacher’s role,and also promote teachers’ professional development in classroom teaching,class management and students’ learning and growth.The purpose of this study is to explore the metaphor of teacher role of junior high school students by means of questionnaire and interview,so as to provide the corresponding basis for promoting the education and teaching of junior high school teachers and the physical and mental health development of junior high school students.This study contained four parts in total.In the first part,we developed a teacher role metaphor questionnaire for junior high school students to explore the psychological structure of teacher role metaphors of junior high school students;in the second part,we investigated the current situation of teacher role metaphors of junior high school students to understand the basic characteristics of teacher role metaphors of junior high school students;In the third part,the "Teacher Role Metaphor Questionnaire for Junior High School Students","Teacher-Student Relationship Scale","Academic Self-Efficacy Scale",and "Learning Engagement Scale" were used to investigate 803 junior high school students to verify the chain mediation effect of teacher role metaphors in predicting learning engagement,the robustness of the model was analyzed by multi-group comparison to explore whether the mediating model was regulated by demographic variables.The fourth part used interviews to further analyze the teacher role metaphors of junior high school students and to supplement and validate the findings of the three previous studies.The results of the above four studies were as follows.(1)The teacher role metaphor of junior high school students contained three dimensions,namely,companionship guardianship,direction guidance,and sacrificial devotion,and the teacher role metaphor questionnaire has good measurement index and can be used to evaluate the teacher role metaphor of junior high school students.(2)The teacher role metaphors of junior high school students were generally positive,but showed group variability.Junior high school students’ class leaders had more positive teacher role metaphors;as they moved up in grade,junior high school students’ teacher role metaphors gradually tended to be negative.(3)Teacher role metaphors not only directly influenced middle school students’ learning engagement,but also indirectly influenced learning engagement through teacher-student relationships and academic self-efficacy.A multi-cluster comparison revealed a moderating role of grade level in the chain mediation model of teacher role metaphors.Conclusions: This study believed that teacher role metaphor of junior high school students can not only directly affect learning engagement,but also indirectly affect learning engagement through teacher-student relationship and academic self-efficacy,which reveals the connotation of teacher role metaphor of junior high school students.Positive teacher role metaphor of junior high school students can improve their degree of learning involvement and shorten the psychological distance between teachers and students,so as to help teachers better class management and create a better learning and growth environment for students.
